Here is my modest JOTA report.
K4FAU (www.k4fau.org) is the Amateur Radio Club station of the Florida Atlantic University (www.fau.edu) in Boca Raton Florida.
Scouting in the USA is a bit different from Scouting in the Netherlands. Most scouting groups / troops don't have their own club house and gather in schools, churches and at member homes. The plan was to invite local troops to come and visit the K4FAU shack during the JOTA weekend. Because the local council organized a regional camp and they had no room for the JOTA in their schedule no scouts planned to visit our station. I (PA3GVR / W4RIS) decided to participate by myself and try to work as many Dutch JOTA stations as possible. This way it would be possible for the young club scouts to talk with the US in their native Dutch.

My JOTA got off to an easy start. Our station / shack had just been cleaned and checked out so there was no need to bring my own equipment or even build a tower for the antenna as is customary in the Netherlands.
Immediately after work on Friday I hurried to the University to be in time for the start of the JOTA in The Netherlands. Because of the 6 hour time difference the start of the JOTA in The Netherlands (and mainland Europe) was at 6 pm in Florida.
My first 2002 JOTA contact was with CT3EE Louis (CS9AEP) in Madera. This was a sign that everything was working and that my signal was making it into Europe. 10 minutes later I had my first contact with The Netherlands, Scout Group Prins Maurits, PA3BTQ/J with Johan as operator. After this followed: PA3HJG/J; PA3DUN/J; PA4VHF/J; PA2ION/J; PA0AHI/J; GB4CNS; CT4DZ; PA3GJX/J en IK7MCJ. The first couple of contacts went very easy but as time went on the frequency became very busy and it became more and more difficult to work the stations calling me. Around 8pm I decided to call it quits. I hadn't eaten yet and it was 2 am in The Netherlands. Most scouts would be in bed by now after a long day of building towers and other activities.

Saturday morning the conditions towards Europe were bad. There were many US stations operating the JOTA and it looked as if they were not listening to the weak signals from Europe. I finally got trough around 9:30 am (3:30 pm NL) to the Rover Crofts Scout Group from Bildhoven. John informed me that the scouts were busy outside. John was complaining about the cold weather in The Netherlands which made me laugh. Looking out the window I could see the palm trees and it was a comfortable 74F. John also told me about their website www.rover-crofts.nl It had a web cam and I could see John operating the radio live!

Because I had made other plans (as there were no scouts coming to visit) I was getting ready to switch of the radio when the best contact of the JOTA happened.
While I was tuning around the band for the last time I heard two Dutch stations in QSO with each other. To my surprise they were Mr. van Daal Group from Boskoop, PA1FJ/J and Scouting St. Victor from Waddinxveen, PA3ALF/J. I used to be a member of the Pieter Maritz group from Waddinxveen and I was very familiar with the two Scout Groups form regional activities and Scouting parties (the best were of course organized by the PM;) ).
Because both stations were only 5 miles from each other and were probably using ground wave propagation I decided to first listen to what they had to tell each other.
Jos (PA3ALF) explained that their tower was 25 meter (75 FT) wide and 1 meter (3 FT) high. This was not quite according to their plans ;) During the setup of the tower it came down. Luckily nobody got injured. I finally broke in to the QSO. At first I was talking to PA1FJ/J with Pim and Fred behind the mike. When it was time to hand the mike to Jos, PA3ALF/J the QRM on the band became very bad and I had to say goodbye.

This JOTA was very short but very nice for me and I hope that next JOTA (2003) we can have local scouts behind the mike of K4FAU.

Via deze weg wil ik mijn bescheide JOTA rapport inleveren.
K4FAU is het club station van de Florida Atlantic University (www.fau.edu www.k4fau.org) in Boca Raton Florida.

Scouting hier in de VS werkt iets anders dan in Nederland, de meeste scouting groepen/troops hebben geen club huis maar komen bijelkaar in scholen, kerken en bij de leden thuis. Het plan was dan ook om locale Troops uit tenodigen op ons club station. Dit ging helaas niet door vanwege een regional scouting kamp en hier was in het programma helaas geen plaats voor de JOTA. Ik (pa3gvr / w4ris (ex-kg4pvx)) heb toen besloten om zelf het station te draaien en voornamelijk contact te zoeken met Nederlandse JOTA stations zodat ze in het Nederlands met de VS konden praten.

Mijn JOTA begon vrij gemakkelijk. Omdat we juist het hele station hebben gerenoveerd hoefde ik geen toren te bouwen of apperatuur mee te nemen.
Ik ben dan ook vrijdags vanuit mijn werk direct naar de universiteit gereden om zo optijd voor het begin van de JOTA in Nederland achter de radio te zitten. Voor mij was dit pas het begin van de avond van wege de 6 uur tijds verschil.
Mijn eerste verbinding van de avond was met CT3EE / CS9AEP Louis in Madera. Dit was een teken dat alles werkte en dat mijn signal in Europa aan kwam. Na 10 minuten had ik verbinding met Nederland, Scouting Prins Maurits, PA3BTQ/J met achter de microfoon Johan, was de eerste Nederlandse groep. Hierna volgden: PA3HJG/J; PA3DUN/J; PA4VHF/J; PA2ION/J; PA0AHI/J; GB4CNS; CT4DZ; PA3GJX/J en IK7MCJ. De eerste paar verbindingen gingen alle maal zonder veel problemen en er waren veel Nederlandse stations die probeerde contact met mij te krijgen, maar helaas werdt het te druk op de frequentie en kon ik nog maar een beperkt aantal stations duidelijk horen. Om 20:00 uur locale tijd hield ik het voor gezien, ik had nog niets gegeten en in Nederland was het 02:00 een tijd dat vele scouts het voor gezien houden na een lange dag pionieren en andere bezigheden.
Zaterdag 's ochtens was het slecht met de verbindingen naar Nederland.
Veel Amerikaanse stations waren nu volop met de JOTA bezig en luisterde niet naar de zwakke signalen vanuit Europa. Uiteindelijk lukte het mij toch om 09:30 (NL 15:30) verbinding te krijgen met de Rover Crofts uit Bilthoven. John vertelde mij dat de scouts daar volop met andere programma onderdelen bezig waren. John klaagde over de temperatuur, dit maakte mij aan het lachen bij mij was het 23 graden celsius en als ik het raam uit keek zag ik palm bomen. Ook maakte John mij attend op hun web site www.rover-crofts.nl hier kon ik John zien via hun webcam!
Omdat er geen scouts zouden komen had ik andre plannen gemaakt voor de rest van het weekeinde en net toen ik van plan was om alles afte zetten en naar huis te gaan volgede voor mij de leukste verbinding van deze JOTA.

Terwijl ik voor de laatste keer over de band draaide om te luiteren of er nog NL stations waren horde ik twee NL stations met elkaar in verbinding. Tot mijn verassing waren dit de Mr. van Daal Groep uit Boskoop, PA1FJ/J en Scouting Sint Victor uit Waddinxveen, PA3ALF/J. Ik ben zelf oud lid van de Pieter Maritz groep uit Waddinxveen en ken bijde groepen wel van region activiteiten en van de fantastische scouting feesten. (De beste waren natuurlijk van de PM!). Ik luisterde eerste mee naar wat zij elkaar te vertellen hadden, Jos (PA3ALF) vertelde dat de mast die de Sint Victor gepionierd had 25 meter breed en 2 meter hoog was, dit was niet volgens de planning..... De mast was tijdens de opbouw omgevallen, maar gelukkig waren er geen ongelukken gebeurd. Als eerste had ik verbinding met PA1FJ/J met Pim en Fred achter de microfoon. Toen het de beurt was voor PA3ALF/J, Jos ging de verbinding helaas de mist in een ander station stoorde de verbinding en ik kon Jos maar af en toe goed horen. Ik heb toen gedag gezegd.

Voor mij was het alles bij elkaar een kort en leuk JOTA weekeinde.

Hopelijk kunnen we de volgende JOTA Scouts achter de microfoon plaatsen van K4FAU.
